Charity runners appeal for support

Superintendent Peter Barnes and Chief Inspector Paul Keylock have so far received $400,000 in support of their upcoming participation in a South Africa marathon to raise funds for a special school, but the sum still falls short of their target of $1 million.

It will be difficult for the pair to reach their target without some big sponsors. They, therefore, hope that more colleagues in the Force will dip into their pockets generously to help the Watchdog Early Learning and Development Centre in Central. Those who wish to sponsor their run may make out cheques payable to "Watchdog Limited" and send them to Paul, DOO-STDIST. His telephone number is 2694-6310 and email address is doo-stdist@police.gov.hk.

In 2000 Paul raised $570,000 for the centre by running in the London Marathon.

On June 16, the pair is set to run in the 89-kilometre "Comrades Marathon" which will start in Durban and finish in Pietermaritzburgh. They have been training hard for their departure for Durban on June 12.

As a warm up for their "double" marathon in South Africa, Peter and Paul participated in the 65-kilometre "Round the Island" race on April 25. "That was the hardest thing we have ever experienced. Peter completed it in 8 hrs 39 mins and I completed it in 9 hrs 48 mins. The race was much more difficult than a normal one because of the loose stones, roots of trees and a lot of steps of up and down on the paths," said Mr Keylock.

The pair hopes to complete their "double" marathon in 11 hours
