Three Australian law enforcement agencies have commended six Narcotics Bureau (NB) officers for their contributions to four joint operations, including one code-named "Operation Suka", and described as "long and extremely complex".

Five representatives from the agencies - Mr John Paul Lehmann and Mr David Nelson from the Australian Joint Asian Crime Group; Mr Barry Alexander from the Australian Crime Commission, and Mr Robert Wilson and Mr Bill Lee, both local agents from the Australian Federal Police - recently called at NB to present Certificate of Appreciation to six detective senior inspectors, Jackson Mak, Tammy Chan, Alan Chung, Simon Leung, Robert Lok and Teresa Chiang.

The officers have been commended for their "outstanding detective work and exemplary contributions" to the four joint operations.

In the year-long "Operation Suka", a transnational drug trafficking syndicate importing drugs into Australia was neutralised, resulting in the arrest of four persons, including the syndicate head from Hong Kong, and seizure of 93.5 kg of Methampethamine in Australia in May 2003.

Speaking at the presentation ceremony, Mr Lehmann said: "I am here to say thank you for the continued close co-operation. The level of support and co-operation given to it (Australian authorities) had proved to be absolutely crucial to the success of what had been a long and extremely complex operation against global crime. Your untiring efforts had led to valuable clues and evidence to assist the operations and the ensuing prosecution in Australia."

In reply, NB Chief Superintendent Kenny Ip said the four joint operations once again demonstrated the importance of international co-operation in combating transnational drug trafficking and the Force's commitment to working in partnership with international law enforcement agencies to combat drug trafficking activities in both Hong Kong and abroad.
