A new telephone switching system was installed in the new Arsenal House on June 20.
As decanting activities are scheduled to start in new Arsenal House late this month, the new system moved in without fanfare to replace the old one, which has been operating for more than 13 years, for providing daily telephone services to the staff working at Police Headquarters.
Besides general office telephone features, the new system has many additional advanced features, for instance voice and facsimile mailboxes. Widely used in the commercial world today, voice mailbox not only boosts communication efficiency, but also enhances the performances of individual workers.
The primary function of facsimile mailbox is to convert paper-based facsimile messages into electronic mail format for transmission on the Police E-mail Network. This can save a lot of manpower in handling and transferring incoming paper-based facsimile messages, thereby reducing message flowing time and increasing message/information transmission efficiency. Furthermore, the mechanism of deploying facsimile mailbox can help to eliminate junk facsimile and advertising messages, resulting in a reduction of use of paper and facsimile machine toner so as to enable the Force to make a significant contribution to environmental protection.
Operations of outgoing facsimile would not have any change due to the use of facsimile mailbox. The use of facsimile mailbox in new Arsenal House would be subject to a six-month evaluation. If the result were positive in both responses and comments, facsimile mailbox would be widely used in the Force.
To enhance work efficiency and to meet the anticipated bandwidth demand of information technology, a structured cabling system has been installed in new Arsenal House. The system has adopted the latest international open standards for optical fibre and unshielded twisted pairs as the transmission media. Hence, all the voice, video, video conferencing,
multi-media training as well as facsimile and data
communications can make use of the system for transmission at high speed. Besides, unshielded twisted pairs can fulfill most terminal connections and bandwidth requirements, including telephone set, computer terminal and facsimile machine, thereby enhancing the system's flexibility and
compatibility. |
