EU NTN gears up for rainy season |

The Emergency Unit of New Territories North (EU NTN) Region is well prepared to render assistance in the event of serious flooding in low-lying areas in the North District of New Territories. Although the sewage and drainage works in the North District have been improving, flooding remains a matter of concern to the Region whenever there are pro-longed heavy rainstorms. "As such, we have thrashed out contingency measures for the forthcoming rainy season!" said NTN Senior Superintendent (Operations) Leung King-hang. Mr Leung pointed out that although Fire Services Department is the "lead" department for rescue operations in flooded areas, experiences showed that police still play an active role and have to assist the department in rescue operations, especially when a vast area is affected. "The Emergency Unit NTN is therefore always fully prepared to respond swiftly to any flooding reports, and to assist in rescue operations," he noted. Following extensive flooding in the North District a few years ago, EU NTN has started introducing a range of equipment to meet operational needs for rescues. The equipment includes inflatable boats, 4-HP outboard engines, Wellington Drop Lines, lifejackets and rattan poles. In addition to providing officers with the equipment they need, EU NTN headquarters staff also provide regular training on the use of floating aids for rescuing people in difficulties, use of inflatable boats and steering of inflatable boats with outboard engines, to make sure every officer is capable of rendering effective assistance in rescue operations. In addition, periodical reviews are made of the types and quantities of the equipment EU NTN uses so that it is always well prepared for handling flooding and protecting life and property. Support Wing has recently coordinated the review and purchase of new lifejackets for the Force. The newly selected lifejackets will very soon be distributed to user formations. "I am confident that this will further enhance the overall safety of our officers," Mr Leung concluded.
