The Child Protection Policy Unit (CPPU) conducted the first workshop for over 60 Court Prosecutors at the Department of Justice last month to enhance their knowledge and skills of handling "vulnerable witnesses".

The Department of Justice invited CPPU to provide professional training to Court Prosecutors, after the recent extension of "live television link trials" to the Kowloon City Magistrates' Court and the Fanling Magistrates' Court has increased the demand for Court Prosecutors to apply special knowledge and skills in helping "vulnerable witnesses", including children and mentally incapacitated witnesses, to testify in court.

CPPU has conducted numerous training on handling "vulnerable witnesses" for government departments and non-governmental organisations in the past, but it was the first time that CPPU was invited to provide such training for Court Prosecutors.

With a view to emphasising the importance of multi-disciplinary collaboration in handling "vulnerable witnesses", the CPPU had invited professionals from Social Welfare Department (SWD) to jointly design and conduct training for Court Prosecutors. The training contents included psychology of "vulnerable witnesses", special investigative procedures involving such witnesses, questioning techniques, and the psychology of "vulnerable witnesses" attending trials. The speakers included Senior Inspector Celia Yip Kim-ying, Clinical Psychologist Kindy Lam Yuk-ip and Social Work Officer Ada Wong Wai-han of SWD.

After attending the training, the Court Prosecutors found they had gained a better understanding of "vulnerable witnesses" and are better equipped in handling the witnesses in a more caring manner.

The workshop is well received by Court Prosecutors
