Undergraduates join mentorship programme |

A total of 100 second year undergraduates and 30 police officers have been selected for the "Police Mentorship Programme" as Mentees and Mentors respectively since it was launched in March to recruit the best-qualified candidates available to join the Force. Under the mentorship programme, serving inspectorate officers and above, who are graduates of local universities, will assist and interact with the undergraduates from their parent universities who have joined the scheme. For its part, the Recruitment Division has provided support and assistance for Mentors and Mentees in the forms of group visits and reference material. The first group visit was conducted in May this year to the Police Training School (PTS) when a passing out parade was held. Apart from sharing the joy and excitement of the passing out recruits, the Mentees also met the Probationary Inspectors under training. After this, they visited PTS' Tactical Training Complex to see state-of-the-art facilities of tactical firearms training. They were also briefed on recruitment-related issues. Another visit was held earlier this month when about 80 Mentees and Mentors toured the Police Tactical Unit (PTU) Headquarters. After receiving a multi-media presentation on the history, structure, training and roles of the PTU, the Mentees saw at first hand the current PTU basic internal security equipment, protective gear and cutting equipment, and watched Platoon Attack training provided by the Foxtrot Company. All Mentees and Mentors welcomed the visits. During informal discussions and experience sharing, the Mentees, in particular, were impressed by the professionalism of both the Platoon members and the training staff. The next group activity under the Police Mentorship Programme will be a visit to the Border District on September 25 to help Mentees appreciate various frontline policing duties, including anti-illegal immigrants, traffic control and other related matters. Apart from group visits arranged by Recruitment Division, each Mentor also maintains regular contact with, and devises activities for, three to four Mentees from his or her parent university till their graduation. The Mentor will be the role model for the Mentees, and will provide them with information about the Force and the challenges of the career of a Police Inspector. Since launching of the Police Mentorship Programme, favourable comments have been received from both Mentees and Mentors, who have shown support for the programme, and actively taken part in the activities organised for them. They have also provided positive and constructive suggestions on the way forward. A new website for the Police Mentorship Programme has been uploaded onto POINT to provide update information and activities, plus interesting photos. Force members may enter the website through the Recruitment Webpage under Human Resources Branch, Personnel Wing, or through direct link to http://ux37phq.hpf.gov.hk:8088/bbs/recruit/rec_page/pmp/indexpmp.html. The Police Mentorship Programme will be reviewed in October this year.
