Secretary for Justice Elsie Leung called for public support for fighting crime, as Junior Police Call (JPC) members attempted to break a world record of popping "fight crime balloons" on August 19.

During a visit to the JPC Fight Crime Summer Camp, Ms Leung called on the public to join hands with the Force to fight crime by making use of their "powerful weapons of eyes, ears, mouths and hands" to watch out for and report crime.

She added that full support and active involvement by different sectors of the community were essential to the fight against crime.

Accompanied by Commissioner Lee Ming-kwai, Ms Leung participated in the Guinness World Record breaking attempt, "Simultaneous Balloon Popping", which was one of the activities to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the JPC Scheme.

In the attempt, a total of 3,100 JPC members and their family members popped 2,477 "fight crime balloons" within 10 seconds, breaking the previous world record of 1,603 balloons set in the US early this year.

Guinness World Records officials have accepted JPC's request to have the feat recognised as a world record, and JPC will submit relevant documents for verification.

The annual JPC summer camp at Wu Kwai Sha Youth Village in Ma On Shan, organised by the Force with sponsorship from the Summer Youth Programme Committee and other organisations, aimed at providing wholesome activities for JPC members during the summer vacation.

This year, the camp has adopted "helping the police fight crime" as the theme by disseminating anti-drug and fight crime messages to campers through a variety of activities, including cartoon drawing competition, sharing session with rehabilitated drug addicts, singing contest, games design competition and various sports activities.

Two award-winning teams from the games design competition will participate in a territory-wide collective games competition organised by the Summer Youth Programme Committee.

Running from August 17 to 20, the JPC fight crime summer camp attracted over 3,000 JPC members.
