Seventeen members of the Police Boxing Club (PBC) have been qualified as Boxing Instructors by the Guangzhou Physical Sports Institute, after attending a weeklong training course run by the Institute. The PBC members obtained their new qualifications after passing written and practical examinations conducted by this renowned Institute in the Police Boxing Club Gym in New Territories North Regional Headquarters last month. During the training course, Professors Mai Quanan and Zhou Zaiping, both from the Institute, provided extremely interesting insights into sports training techniques and muscular development, whilst the Guangdong Provincial Boxing Coach, Mr Yun Jianqiang, ran a "High energy" Boxing Instructors programme. According to Inspector Ng Chit-bun, all the participants thoroughly enjoyed this demanding course. "China is a leading light in amateur boxing, and all of us have learned a great deal from this very professional course. Everyone was very impressed by the very high standard of instruction and coaching. The Police Boxing Club certainly intends to run similar courses again in the future," he said. Mr Ng pointed out that many people do not realise that boxing is becoming increasingly popular as a sport on the Mainland, which is also fast growing into a powerhouse in amateur boxing. At a national level, Guangdong is currently the "most powerful province", he added. Mr Ng said any other police sports clubs interested in running training courses with the Guangdong Physical Sports Institute may contact Security Wing Acting Chief Inspector Yuen Tai-man, who would be happy to put them in touch with the Institute's teaching staff.
