Kowloon West Regional Crime Prevention Office (KW RCPO), together with the Police Community Relations Offices of Mongkok and Sham Shui Po, recently held two seminars to prevent theft of mobile phones and handling of the stolen phones. As more and more stolen mobile phones are ending up in second-hand mobile phone dealer shops in Mongkok and Sham Shui Po, KW RCPO invited over 50 dealers to attend each of the seminars. At the seminar held at Mongkok Station, Woman Chief Inspector Chui Yui-luen, Kowloon West Regional Crime Prevention Officer, updated the participants on the latest trend of theft of mobile phones, and explained the measures that phone dealers could take to avoid buying stolen mobile phones. She also reminded second-hand mobile phone dealers to be cautious on every transaction and take all necessary precautionary measures for their own benefits. Chief Inspector Chan Sung-shing of Regional Crime Unit (II) of Kowloon West also briefed the participants on the law on the offence of handling stolen goods and the penalty it carries. He stressed that second-hand mobile phone dealers must take all possible measures during each transaction to ensure that they did not incur criminal liability for handling stolen goods. In view of encouraging response from the participants, KW RCPO plans to continue conducting more similar seminars in the near future. Meanwhile, KW RCPO reminds members of the public to make a record of the unique IMEI numbers of their mobile phones. It has also designed a phone-shaped card for the public to record the number to assist police in tracing the phone if it is lost or stolen.
