No room for complacency in road safety |

Although fatal road accidents in 2004 had dropped to a 45-year low at 160, there was no room for complacency, said Deputy Commissioner Tang King-shing in the capacity of Chairman of the Road Safety Council on March 10. Addressing the Road Safety Campaign Launching Ceremony, Mr Tang said road safety was an ongoing battle and the council this year would step up promotion of "Smart Driving" to educate motorists to "Be Courteous, Stay Alert and Abide by the Law". "We should all be responsible road users, with commitment to road safety and care and concern for other road users," he said. Also officiating at the ceremony were the Chairman of Road Safety Campaign Committee, Mr Lawrence Yu, and the Commissioner for Transport, Mr Robert Footman. To launch this year's publicity programme, a television special appealing to cyclists, pedestrians and professional drivers to follow road safety rules will be broadcast at 11.05 pm on March 25 on TVB-Jade. Joint efforts will be made with non-governmental and community bodies, including District Councils, to drive home the road safety message. With cycling safety also being a theme of the publicity programme, the Road Safety Council aims to establish a safe and efficient road network in Hong Kong to minimise traffic accidents and ensure the safety of all road users. In closing, Mr Tang called on all residents to join hands with the Road Safety Council in realising the vision of "Zero Accidents on the Road, Hong Kong's Goal".
