The "Mainland and Overseas Summer Course Sponsorship" Scheme (MOSCS) will continue to offer officers' children an opportunity to gain more exposure to different cultures, broaden their horizon and improve their confidence and communication skills. This year a total of 93 places will be available for application under the scheme.

The sponsorship scheme is open to children (aged 12 to 21 on submission of application) of officers of SSP rank and below (on a proportional basis), who have never been sponsored by the Police Welfare Fund for attending summer courses. The sponsored places will be one for SSP and SP, nine for CIP, SIP and IP, and 83 for JPO.

The deadline for applications is May 7.

Parents and children can choose the courses on the Mainland or overseas (excluding Macau and Taiwan) and organising bodies, subject to the Force's endorsement. General sightseeing tours will not be supported.

Students need to submit copies of their school reports for the previous academic year (2003-2004) as supporting documents of their above average performance at school.

Successful applicants will be chosen by ballot if the number of applicants exceeds the quota.

The sponsorship will be a maximum of $3,000 for JPO, $2,000 for CIP, SIP, or IP, and $1,000 for SSP or SP, or 70 per cent of the course fee, whichever is the less.

The ballot will take place on May 21 in PSRC, and the results will be announced on PEN and by individual notices.

For summer courses that may cost more than the maximum sponsorship amounts, parents of successful applicants may apply to their respective Regional Welfare Officers for a maximum loan of $20,000 under the "Loan for Police children attending Mainland and Overseas Summer Course". Subject to the normal approval criteria, which include no outstanding debts to the Police Welfare Fund, the loan is repayable by 10 monthly instalments.

The course programme must be organised by a reputable bona fide institution or organisation, subject to the endorsement of the Force.

Successful applicants will have to submit course details and confirmation of a place to CSP PS&SR (Attn: EO SUP 2) by no later than June 10. Enquiries can be made on Personnel Services and Staff Relations Branch Hotline 2860-3200 or to Miss Bessie Hui, EO SUP 2 on 2860-3332.
