To cater to a demand for police services following the opening of the Hong Kong International Theme Park (also known as the Disneyland Theme Park) on September 12, the Penny's Bay Police Post will commence operations on July 1.

Situated in the Utility Yard, adjacent to the vehicular access to the Park in Sunny Bay, North Lantau, the post is part of the infrastructure and community facilities, such as fire station and ambulance depot, to support the theme park. It will serve as a Reporting Centre to deal with reports of lost property by visitors, miscellaneous crimes and other requests for police assistance. In addition, it has been designed to function as a command post to co-ordinate operational response to major incidents within the Park and its immediate area.

The Police Post is a seven-metre high reinforced concrete single storey building with a report room, control room, interview rooms, temporary holding areas, storage, and communication rooms. Sufficient furniture, equipment and accommodation are available to facilitate standing-by and briefing for a PTU platoon.

Environmental considerations have been given to the building design with the following features incorporated:

* Use of photo-voltaic (solar) panels on the low pitch metal roof for renewable energy;

* Use of prefabricated columns, latticework, roof support brackets and artificial stone walls to reduce pollution and waste in construction and maintenance;

* Use of environmental friendly materials, such as non-Ozone depletion refrigerant in the Air Conditioning Unit;

* Use of rainwater recycling for washing vehicles and watering plants;

* Maximum use of daylight, such as high windows, skylights in the report room and control room, and glass canopy for the covered car park, and

* Achieving higher energy efficiency by low overall thermal transfer through the roof overhang design and landscaping.

While the external area and the non-public interface area of the Police Post will blend with the "garden theme" of the Park, the public interface area, i.e. the report room, will adopt the Force layout and corporate colours.

Construction of the Police Post has been completed, and IT and telecommunication equipment will be installed for its commissioning in July.
