On Sunday, April 3, 2005, the drawing of a "Tree of Wishes" was hung up at the main entrance to Police Sports & Recreational Club (PSRC), which later attracted 200 cards containing a variety of wishes. This was a small but meaningful event indeed.
In our family life education series, we are promoting family harmony through articles that foster discussion and stimulation in various areas, namely, marital relationships and parenting skills. These topics look simple but actually involve complicated issues. In the media, we read about domestic violence and disputes among husbands, wives, parents and children. We sometimes cannot stop wondering, "What's going on in families nowadays?"
What should we be looking at? In this era, with the advance of technology affecting our daily lives, we have less opportunity for interaction among family members and hence are unable to express feelings as freely as we did before. We tend to be more reserved in praising others. Do you recall the moments when you failed to show appreciation to your spouse for waiting for you for dinner ? Have you been, as head of the household, reluctant to praise your kids for helping out with household chores? Have we forgotten how to treat our loved ones nicely?
The "Tree of Wishes" not only serves as a medium but also encourages us to express gratitude and care to our families more openly and frequently in a way that is much needed for nurturing a harmonious family. At a glance of the "tree" one could easily find that children tend to be more eager in expressing their wishes to their parents. Here are some examples:
"I wish my dad will spend more time playing basketball with me"
"Mom, I love you"
"I wish my mom will care more about me"
You will see the "tree" again at the Family Harmony Carnival to be held at PSRC on Mother's Day on May 8. On that day, there will be competitions with family as a theme, namely, "Making a Family Salad" and "A letter to Mom/Dad", as well as various talks and games for families and children.
Television celebrity, Cheng Tan-shui, and Dr Sandra Tsang Kit-man of University of Hong Kong will give a talk on "Achieving a Harmonious Family" to Force members.
Those wishing to attend the event may call 2860-2442 (PHQ & HKI RWO) or 2304-1405 (KE RWO) for registration. Games tickets will be given out on the day of the event.
