The Kowloon West Youth-Care Committee, which was formed by the Regional Crime Prevention Office of Kowloon West (RCPO KW) in 2001, has successfully completed two more youth projects - "Anti-juvenile Crime Video Clips Competition"and "Creative Colouring Competition". Over 60 prizes for the two competitions were presented during the committee's fifth Inauguration Ceremony held at the Grand Century Place in Mong Kok last month. The Police Choir was in attendance at the ceremony. Aiming at encouraging youngsters to abide by the law, raising their awareness of civil responsibilities and disseminating anti-crime messages, the two competitions have attracted a very good response from youngsters and pupils. There were 69 entries to the video clips competition and 18,200 entries to the colouring competition from pupils from 119 primary schools in Kowloon West. An adjudication panel comprising film director Mr To Kwok-wai, Police Public Relations Branch Chief Superintendent Ma Wai-luk, and presidents of the Youth-Care Committee, picked the winners of the video clips competition. Hui Hon-kit's "The Wall"on anti-drugs and Lee Ngai-pan's "Shop theft"won the championships of the Senior Class and Primary Class respectively, with each being awarded an $8,000 cash prize, a trophy and a certificate. The adjudicators were very impressed with the winners' anti-crime messages and creativity. In the colouring competition, Professor So Kwok-sang of the Hong Kong Institute of Education, Superintendent Cheung Kin-kwong of Kowloon West and presidents of the Youth-Care Committee selected Chan Nim-pok from Ma Tau Chung Government Primary School and Fung Ka-man from Yaumati Catholic Primary School as winners of the Senior Class and Primary Class respectively. Each winner received a $1,500 book coupon, a medal and a certificate. In order to promote fighting crime, the RCPO KW and the Youth-Care Committee will provide VCDs of the winning works for distribution to all primary and secondary schools, youth centres, community voluntary organisations and JPC clubs in Kowloon West. The Kowloon West Youth-Care Committee has been formed with the assistance of government departments, youth organisations, school principals in Kowloon West, District Fight Crime Committee and community leaders who are concerned with the problems of juvenile delinquency. The committee has launched various activities for youngsters to develop positive values of life and to participate in healthy pursuits. These included workshops, camping, basketball competitions and visits to correctional institutions. The committee has also published 14 issues of a "Smart-Teen"magazine, with 700,000 copies released to 89 secondary schools, JPC clubs and youth centres in Kowloon West. The magazine is also available at the websites of the Hong Kong Education City and the Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups.
