Getting fit for HKMC |
||
In anticipation of the increased demands required of officers during policing the World Trade Organization Hong Kong Ministerial Conference (HKMC) in December, Police Tactical Unit Headquarters has produced a fitness programme for officers, which is designed to enhance strength and cardiovascular conditioning over a 20-week cycle. Deputy Commandant of PTU HQ Mike Cartwright pointed out that in devising the programme, recognition had been taken of the fact that for many officers, exercise needs to be approached from a basic level of understanding and built upon in a progressive and methodical manner. He has offered some useful tips in this respect. "Avoidance of injury resulting from over-exercise is just as important as exercising itself," he noted. Realising that for many officers, exercise may not always be possible during regular hours. Mr Cartwright called for a common-sense approach. "Exercising with a training partner is an ideal form of motivation and a useful indication of progress. The importance of a balanced diet, drinking water, and adequate rest are also important." Officers can work through an initial conditioning phase, which lasts for six to eight weeks, depending on progress made and different levels of initial fitness. Highlighting PTU HQ's approach to focusing on operational fitness, Mr Cartwright said officers can approach the PT Section at PTU HQ (Tel. 2669-6343) for additional information regarding the programme or for advice on any other fitness issues.
