HKPOCA members rally for crime prevention | |||
Members of the Hong Kong Police Old Comrades' Association (HKPOCA) have rallied for the Force's efforts to disseminate crime prevention messages to the public. They started participating in their first crime prevention activity - a talk organised for the elderly by New Territories South Regional Crime Prevention Office (NTS RCPO) - on July 13, one day after their chairman, Mr Au Ting, received a letter of appreciation from Director of Operations Yam Tat-wing.
The NTS RCPO talk was aimed at preventing the elderly from falling prey to street scams. In presenting his letter, Mr Yam praised the association for motivating members to take part in community services and volunteer work, making contributions to society and enriching their retirement life at the same time. He said it was a very meaningful endeavour for the association to assist in promoting crime prevention. "Most members of the association are retired officers. With their wealth of knowledge and experience of police work, they are qualified in helping to promote education and publicity activities for crime prevention. More laudable is the fact that our former senior colleagues will use their expertise again to serve the community!" he added. In a brief speech, Mr Au said his association is duty-bound to assist in alerting the elderly to street scams. "With our work experience, professional knowledge and inter-personal communication skills, crime prevention publicity activities will bring satisfactory results," he added. The idea of enlisting HKPOCA's support for crime prevention publicity activities originated from NTS RCPO, which is convinced that HKPOCA members would make a great contribution to the success of the activities. The Police Public Relations Bureau, Crime Prevention Bureau and other regional crime prevention offices quickly endorsed the idea, and the HKOCA lost no time in committing itself to assisting the crime prevention publicity and education activities to be organised by PPRB and the various Regions during 2005-06. The first wave of crime prevention publicity activities in NTS Region was rolled out on July 13 when NTS RCPO held a talk for senior citizens at the Ma On Shan Stadium. With the help of local voluntary agencies, the talk attracted some 200 elderly residents. Lending himself to the talk was HKOCA Executive Member, Mr Yip Shui-tong. The talk stressed the importance for the elderly to stay both mentally healthy and physically fit. For the former, NTS RCPO officers briefed the audience on the modus operandi of street scams and telephone deceptions, while a HKPOCA member, Mr Yam Man-yau, who is a Chinese medicine practitioner, offered some tips on staying healthy. In view of the response to the talk, NTS RCPO will, in line with the crime trend in the Region, organise more crime prevention functions in conjunction with the HKPOCA to provide a safe environment for the local community.
