A job well done |

About 10 am on June 24, the Red Rainstorm Warning Signal was up and it was raining cats and dogs. A Kowloon City resident had her attention caught by the sound of motor horns at the junction of Tin Kwong Road and Ma Tau Wai Road. Driven by curiosity, she looked out of the window to see what was happening. She saw a police constable picking up bamboo poles one by one in the middle of the road and piled them up on the kerb. He then went into shops nearby and came out with some ropes. With the ropes, the constable tied the bamboo poles securely to the roadside railings, before continuing his beat patrol. The resident was so impressed with what she had witnessed that she sent an e-mail to OffBeat to compliment the constable for "what he did and his dedication to duty". "Please accept my appreciation for the officer who has done a very good job," she wrote. The resident said heavy rains and blocked drains had caused minor flooding on the roads, washing discarded bamboo poles from a nearby construction site onto the traffic lanes, posing hazard to traffic. "He not only picked up the drifting bamboo poles, but also took the extra step of asking the shops for ropes to tie them up to ensure traffic would resume normal," she noted. The complimented officer is Senior Police Constable Ng Siu-hong from Hung Hom Division. He said modestly that he was just doing what he should do as a policeman. Having worked in the Force for 21 years, SPC Ng added: "I've never come across a situation like this. The bamboo poles were drifting everywhere. If I hadn't done something, they might have endangered both motorists and pedestrians." |
