Lions Club appreciation

The Hong Kong Lions Club Organising Committee for the 88th Lions Clubs International Annual Convention presented certificates of appreciation to Hong Kong Island Region officers on August 25 for their assistance to the convention, which was held in the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre from June 27 to July 1.

The convention attracted some 20,000 delegates from across the world to Hong Kong, and the biggest event was a six-hour street parade from HKCEC II to Tamar on Tuesday, June 28. The parade presented many challenges mainly arising from the participation of a large number of delegates in the parade and the closure of busy roads near the Cross Harbour Tunnel entrance during a weekday rush-hour period. The route of the parade also covered major road works, and the hot weather was a cause of concern for officers as some delegates were of relatively old ages.

The officers of HKI Region, together with the Lions Club Organising Committee, Hong Kong Tourism Board and the Transport Department established a good working relationship and worked out an implementation plan, including an unprecedented level of pre-event traffic publicity, which ensured that the parade went off smoothly.

In addition to the key stakeholders in the event, invaluable assistance was provided by the Civil Aid Service, St. John's Ambulance, Hong Kong Air Cadet Corps and the Scout Association of Hong Kong, making the street parade a model partnership event.
