Following an opening ceremony with Director of Operations Yam Tat-wing officiating on August 12, the Penny's Bay Police Post is set to cater for the demand for police services after the opening of the Hong Kong International Theme Park on September 12.

Situated opposite to the Fire Station and adjacent to the vehicular access to the Park in Penny's Bay, North Lantau, the Police Post is part of the infrastructure and community facilities to support the theme park and the local community. It will serve as a reporting centre to deal with reports of lost property by visitors, miscellaneous crimes and other requests for police assistance.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Mr Yam said that apart from providing a day-to-day report room service to visitors from all over the world, the Police Post could also function as a Command Post to co-ordinate with other departments in the event of a major incident in the Theme Park or its vicinity.

The Post is a single storey building equipped with a report room, a control room, interview rooms, temporary holding areas, communication rooms and a vehicle parking area. The corporate colours of the Force, light grey and navy blue, have been extensively adopted for the report room, while the surrounding area of the Post blends with the "garden theme" of the Park.

Mr Yam also took the opportunity to thank the Architectural Services Department and Electrical and Mechanical Services Department for their professional support and commitments to making the Post both environmentally friendly and functionally authentic.

Environmental features, which have been incorporated in the building design, include:

* use of photo-voltaic (solar) panels on the low pitch metal roof for renewable energy;

* use of prefabricated columns, latticework, roof support brackets and artificial stonewalls to reduce pollution and waste in construction and maintenance;

* use of environmentally friendly materials such as non-Ozone depletion refrigerant in an air conditioning unit;

* rainwater recycling installation for washing vehicles and watering plants;

* high windows and skylights in the report room and control room and glass canopy for a covered car park to allow maximum use of daylight, and

* roof overhang design and landscaping to achieve higher energy efficiency by a low overall thermal transfer.

Joining Mr Yam at the opening ceremony were Legislative Councillor, Mr Lam Wai-keung; Chairman of Islands District Fight Crime Committee, Mr Lam Kit-sing; Chief Project Manager of Architectural Services Department, Mr Ian Dickinson; New Territories South Regional Commander Tang How-kong, and Planning and Development Branch Chief Superintendent Ms Barbara Willison.
