With the new school year commencing soon, the Eastern District Police Community Relations Office (EDIST PCRO) is launching a special project to achieve bully-free school campuses in the district.

EDIST PCRO's latest initiative, known as "Project LACEMAKER", has had the blessings of the Eastern District Youth Crimes Working Group, which was set up by EDIST in 2002 to prevent and tackle juvenile delinquency.

After probing the problems of juvenile delinquency in March this year, the working group came to the conclusion that only a close co-operation among police, schools and parents could effectively stem out bullying in schools. Hence EDIST came up with "Project LACEMAKER" to enlist the support of schools and parents to make schools free of bullying.

The main features of the project are Report Hotline, Student Advisory Card, Letter to Parents, Publicity Poster and Special Talk.

EDIST has set up a 24-hour hotline 6148-0074 and an e-mail account - helpline2880@yahoo.com.hk - for students in the district to report campus bullying and illegal activities. For the same purpose, EDIST will distribute an advisory card printed with the hotline and e-mail to students who will soon join Form I classes of the schools taking part in a pilot scheme of the project.

To support their roles in child upbringing, EDIST will send letters to remind parents that besides showing care and concern to their children, they have to cultivate them the sense of law-abiding and courage to face challenge.

To reinforce the messages of combating campus bullying and illegal activities involving youths, EDIST will distribute to all schools a publicity poster which stresses the importance of a joint effort among the parties concerned.

Lastly, EDIST's School Liaison Officers will visit the schools participating in the pilot scheme and conduct talks for Form I students on the consequences of committing bullying and taking part in illegal activities, and provide counselling where necessary.
