Criminology academicians visit MAR |

During a visit to Marine Region last month, a party of academicians from the University of Hong Kong, the Fudan University and the University of Singapore, headed by Dr Chu Yiu-kong, Assistant Professor of Department of Sociology of the HKU, shared knowledge and experience of maritime policing and security with some of the Region's officers with high academic qualifications. Over the past few years, the Region has strived to promote continuous interaction with professional bodies in an effort to enlist public support for its efforts to provide quality services. The party was received by TSRO MAR Stanley Yu, who said: "The visit has been designed to provide wide ranging discussions between police officers and young academicians on both current and future policing, as well as the scope of marine police service. "The rationale behind this event is a view to incorporating practical elements into academic theorisation and acquisition of theory support for law-enforcing practices, with both parties benefiting from learning from each other." The party was given an insight into the Region's structural hierarchy, as well as policing and human resources allocation. They were also briefed on the Region's Versatile Maritime Policing Response project, Regional Command and Control Centre, and Marine Police Training School. The participants considered that in the long-term this exchange would have a positive effect not only for MAR but also the Force as a whole. For this reason, MAR is expected to arrange more similar activities in future.
