SCDS members meet officers

 

Members of the Standing Committee on Disciplined Services Salaries and Conditions of Service (SCDS) recently took a close look at the work of the Regional Command and Control Centre (RCCC) and Emergency Unit (EU) of Hong Kong Island Region.

Visiting RCCC HKI and EU HKI were SCDS Chairman, Mr Bernard Chan; Chairman of SCDS's Police Sub-Committee, Mr Nicky Lo, and six members, Professor Chan Yuk-shee, Mr Eddie Ng, Mr Joseph Ho, Mr Ip Kwok-him, Ms Wong Mee-chun and Miss Elaine Chan.

The visit was arranged to give the SCDS members a better idea of the application of new technology for operational communications, and the challenges and dangers faced by EU officers. They also met some EU officers who had received injuries of various degrees in the course of discharging their duties.

After being greeted by SSP OPS HKI Alan Lau, the SCDS members were briefed by WSIP RCCC 1 HKI Cicada Wong and SIP CC3 OPS Ronnie Chung on the work of RCCC HKI and the operation of CC3. After this, the visitors toured the "999" suite, Traffic Console and other facilities, and discussed with officers about their work.

During the second part of the visit, ACIP EU HKI Dennis Cheng and IP RRPU EU HKI Lau Luk-sang gave the SCDS members an overview of the general roles and functions of the Emergency Unit and Regional Rural Patrol Unit. After this, several JPOs recounted how they were injured while on duty, and the subsequent health problems they faced. Other officers also highlighted the challenges, difficulties and dangers they faced while responding to emergencies.

The SCDS members took a look at the equipment and kits regularly used by EU officers, before concluding their visit.

In a letter to Commissioner Lee Ming-kwai after the visit, SCDS Chairman, Mr Bernard Chan, said he and his members were glad to have the opportunity to meet frontline officers and appreciated the dangers and challenges they faced while carrying out their duties. Mr Chan also said he was very impressed with the professionalism and dedication to duties the officers concerned had shown.
