Big rise in police scholarships

Since the police scholarship scheme was launched in the academic year 1999/2000, scholarship winners have increased from nine to 88, and scholarships granted have risen from $270,000 to $1.53 million, said Commissioner Lee Ming-kwai on August 12 when he officiated at the Education Trusts Scholarships Presentation Ceremony for 2005/06.

He said the scholarship scheme was implemented to encourage and commend police officers' children with outstanding academic results. "It's encouraging that the academic results of the children have improved year after year. Though there is a significant increase in the amount of grants allocation, we believe it is worthwhile!" he noted.

Same as last year, the scholarship winners of this year are bright young people, with remarkable academic results and excellent qualities.

The Commissioner attributed the smooth operation of the two trusts to the guidance and assistance provided by the chairmen and members of the Joint Management Committees and Joint Investment Advisory Boards of the two trusts over the past years.

"They have been improving the policy and financial arrangements of the two trusts, so that resources can be fully utilised. On behalf of our colleagues and the beneficiaries of the trusts, I express our gratitude to the former and present chairmen and members of the committees.

"Today, apart from awarding scholarships to the winners, we also extend our thanks to the outgoing chairman and members for their guidance and contributions over the years, including Mr Raymond Kwok, outgoing chairman of the Joint Management Committees, and Mr Tam Siu-ping, Dr Chan Yuet-ngor and Mr Kong Kin-chung, outgoing members of the Joint Management Committees," said Mr Lee.

The Commissioner firmly believed that the trusts would be further developed for the benefits of the children of police officers under the leadership of Mr Victor Li, Chairman of the Joint Management Committees, and Mr Jacob Tsang, Chairman of the Joint Investment Advisory Boards, as well as the respective members.

The two Police Education Trusts - Police Children's Education Trust and Police Education and Welfare Trust, have been established for almost 40 years since 1967. Over the past years, grants have been provided to tens of thousands of children of police officers through various awards to encourage them to pursue their studies.
