Have you changed it today?

Information is an asset to all individuals and organisations. Information Security refers to the protection of information asset in the areas of confidentiality, integrity and availability.

First, let's talk about confidentiality.

What is confidentiality and how you can protect your information asset?

Take your password as an example. Are you using a default password or a weak password? Have you changed it already?

Default password is the password that was given to you when you were a new user, or new to an information system, such as PEN and CTA. The problem with using a default password is obvious. Because it may be known to other users, data confidentiality would be at risk. Imagine other users logging into your account with the default password and gaining access to the confidential information that should only be read by you.

Weak password is a password that can easily be guessed. Examples are your personal particulars, such as mobile phone number, date of birth, or dictionary words. Hackers always attempt to gain unauthorised access by guessing or trying these passwords.

Now, sit back and think about the passwords you are using. Act now if you need to change any to protect your confidentiality.

Steps for changing password in Lotus Notes:

Under 'File', choose 'Tools', then 'User ID'.

Enter the existing password.

Now, click 'Set Password...'. Remember, no weak password!

Next time we shall talk about the 'integrity' aspect of information security.
