Over 120 officers, from Police Constable to Chief Inspector and civilian staff, attended a seminar on "Emotional Regulation" at the Multi-Purpose Hall, PHQ, on April 19.

Dr Gracemary Leung from the University of Hong Kong (HKU), who is a renowned clinical psychologist and an expert in pathological gambling and suicide, conducted the seminar, covering some psychological knowledge about different types of emotion and their influence on life, and skills of regulating positive emotion and promoting mental health. The audience found the skills very practical and beneficial to their family members as well.

"Emotional Regulation", jointly developed by the Police College, Psychological Services Group and the HKU, is the latest module being rolled out under the "Psychological Competency Training" project. The module aims at teaching officers the knowledge and skills related to psychology so that they would maintain their psychological well-being at work and in their daily lives. The training contents will be incorporated into some selected training programmes. In fact, the syllabus of the Police Constable Development Course (Module III) has taken on this subject for the first time.

Psychological Competency Training is a joint project between the Police College and the Psychological Services Group. Other developed modules include Victim Psychology, Conflict Management, Counselling Skills as a Police Supervisor/Colleague and Interpersonal Communication Skills.

Training on psychological competency is well received by the audience
