Records set at Athletics Championship | ||
Two new records were set at the Police Athletics Championship 2007 on May 11, which drew a turnout by 330 athletes on a sunny day at Wan Chai Sports Ground.
Talented Woman Police Constable (WPC) Wong Siu-ping from Tsuen Wan District set new records for the 3,000-metre and 1,500-metre races at 11 minutes 29 seconds and five minutes 19 seconds respectively, chipping 14 and 21 seconds from the old records.
The 10,000-metre race was the first event to start early in the morning with up to 40 contestants, and it was Police Constable (PC) Lai Hok-yan who first crossed the finishing line, beating all his rivals.
For team prizes, the events saw Police Tactical Unit (PTU) dominating the field and taking the trophies for nearly all categories, which definitely helped it clinch the Specialist/Training Units Championship. Wong Tai Sin District was winner of the Other Formations Championship.
For the 1,500-metre race, Marine Outer Waters District PC Chan Man-for and Airport District (APT DIST) Cheng Yuet-wa brought the stands to their feet as they sprinted neck-to-neck for the line, with Chan grabbing his win with a final lunge.
PC Li Chak-ming from Tai Po Division and WPC Kwok Yee-man from PHQ both retained their titles of being the fastest sprinters in the Force. One would definitely feel the heat watching the relay races, with APTDIST and PTU HQ winning the 4x100m and 4x400m relays respectively.
Promotion relay drew a record number of participants from 11 teams. Following a fierce competition, PTU HQ was the first to arrive at the winning post, followed by Police College and APTDIST.
In the 4x400m invitation relay, the Fire Services Department carried away the prize, following a close race against the Immigration Department.
The day's Victor and Victrix Ludorum went to Force sprinters, PC Li Chak-ming and WPC Kwok Yee-man. Experienced runners, Sergeant Leung Yat from PTU HQ and Station Sergeant Lam Ngok-wa, together won the Carpe Diem Trophy.
This year a new prize has been introduced for the best cheering team. The performances by the teams from Kowloon West Crime Headquarters and Wan Chai District were most impressive, and eventually the trophy went to Kowloon West Crime Headquarters.
Following the Police Band's ever-splendid performance, Commissioner Tang King-shing officiated at the prize presentation, assisted by Deputy Commissioner (Management) Fung Siu-yuen and Deputy Commissioner (Operations) Yam Tat-wing.
At the end, the Police Athletics Club (PAC) Chairman thanked volunteers from PAC, Police Football Referee's Club, Hong Kong Amateur Athletics Association and Hong Kong Adventure Corps for providing valuable support to the race. Thanks also went to the staff from PTU HQs, Hong Kong Police College, Auxiliary Medical Service and St. John Ambulance Brigade.
