Police mentees sample crime prevention efforts

Two members of the Police Mentorship Programme are getting an insight into how the police promote and educate the public on crime prevention.

The mentees, Samson Pang Wan-fung and Vick Wong Ho-wik, year II students from the University of Hong Kong, have joined the Regional Crime Prevention Office of Hong Kong Island (RCPO HKI) as summer interns, and their first assignment was to plan an anti-miscellaneous theft campaign to remind the public to keep an eye on their personal belongings whilst shopping in supermarkets.

The campaign also seeks to remind members of the public that they, whilst choosing items from the shelves, never put their wallets or valuables in the trolleys and beware persons hanging around suspiciously.

Following deliberation and discussion, Samson and Vick came up with four tongue twisters to disseminate the messages. In addition, they also designed a publicity poster for display at supermarkets.

The RCPO HKI launched the campaign at a Causeway Bay supermarket where the two mentees and RCPO officers invited shoppers to join the tongue twister game. The shoppers' feedback was very encouraging: the publicity approach is very creative and easily accepted by the general public.

This successful drive shows the summer internship programme is of mutual benefit: the interns gain some work experience and the units where they are working benefit from their new ideas and thoughts.
