ASU to celebrate 30 years in action

Do you still remember your days in shorts or blues, carrying a sterling or MP5, wearing your blue beret and airport permit? You may still have vivid memories of patrolling the aisles in Kai Tak and Hong Kong International Airport, constantly staying alert to terrorists and ensuring Hong Kong's aviation security.

Time flies and the Airport Security Unit (ASU) will soon be celebrating its 30th birthday. May be you were one of the few who joined the "Special Action Squad" that came into being on November 14, 1977, and was later renamed Airport Security Unit. You may have carried the sterling sub-machine gun before it was changed to the MP5, or have participated in rescuing passengers when a China Airlines plane crashed into the sea.

In November 2007 (either 30th or 23rd - to be confirmed), a celebratory buffet dinner will be held at the Novotel Citygate Hong Kong in Tung Chung for past and present members of the Unit to rekindle those memories. Whilst final preparations are still underway, the dinner and gifts will cost about $380 and a limited number of a high-quality souvenir will also be available. Advance bookings of the souvenir are being accepted at $200, but on-the-night sales will cost $50 more, so make your bookings as soon as possible.

To make the gathering more memorable, ASU would appreciate your support in lending memorabilia, such as old photos, souvenirs, uniforms, and equipment, etc., for display on the gala night. The earlier you offer your help, the better the display will be!

For more details of the anniversary celebration, contact Woman Senior Inspector Suzette Foo Yat-ting at 2106-7043 or email ip-sip-ops-3-asu-aptdist@police.gov.hk or Police Constable Chu Chun-lung at 6277-5570 or email admin-asu-aptdist@police.gov.hk.
