Narcotics Bureau (NB) Senior Superintendent Evelyn Lam Man-sai attended a press conference in Beijing on June 25 at the invitation of the Ministry of Public Security when the media were briefed on the neutralisation of a cross-boundary dangerous drug syndicate and the seizure of a large quantity of dangerous drugs.

The press conference elucidated the close co-operation among Beijing, Hong Kong, Guangdong, Fujian and the Philippines, which resulted in the neutralisation of the syndicate on June 6. At the same time, a total of 180 kg of methamphetamine with a market value of 54 million RMB and 10 tonnes of chemical precursors were seized in a manufacturing plant in the Philippines.

Apart from the two traffickers arrested in the Philippines, five others, including a 36-year-old Hong Kong man, were apprehended in Fujian and Guangdong. The syndicate ringleader, Cai Aishan, who had been under NB surveillance in Hong Kong, was arrested in Beijing on June 3 as a result of the timely intelligence NB passed to the Ministry of Public Security.

The press conference in Beijing attracted representatives from over 30 Mainland, Hong Kong and overseas news agencies and it was the first time the Force had been invited to take part. At the conference SSP Evelyn Lam highlighted the seamless co-operation between the Force and the Mainland in intelligence exchanges and training for combating drug trafficking over the past 10 years.
