A total of 260 Form 1 students of Leung Kau Kui College in Central received various forms of coaching by their Form 6 schoolmates and police officers from Central District throughout the just concluded 2006/07 school year.

With the assistance of non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and 30 members of the "Central Power", a volunteer service team formed by police officers in Central District, the Central District Police Community Relations Office launched the yearlong "Police & Student Interact - Mutual Programme" at the college at the start of the 2006/07 school year to help Form 1 students adapt to their secondary school lives and steer clear of crime.

After attending train-the-trainer sessions conducted by the NGOs, the 30 police volunteers in turn coached Form 6 students on how to guide their junior schoolmates as mentors. The three parties maintained close contact with one another during the whole programme.

A ceremony was held recently to mark the successful conclusion of the training programme, with Central District Commander Wong Chi-hung and local dignitaries officiating. Other officiating guests were Central and Western District Fight Crime Committee Chairman, Mr Yip Wing-shing, Honorary President of Central District JPC, Mr Lam Ping-chun, Supervisor of the Tung Wah Group of Hospitals Cross Centre, Ms Brenda Chung, and Principal of Leung Kau Kui College, Mr Lee King-hang.

At the closing ceremony, NGO representatives, police volunteers, and Form 1 and 6 students pointed out that the programme had benefited all the parties involved. In fact, the programme is so successful that the Central District has classified it as one of its long-term juvenile delinquency prevention programme.
