Traffic Hong Kong Island (T HKI) and Hong Kong Road Safety Patrol (HK & Islands Region) jointly kicked off the "2007 Tram Safety Campaign cum Tram Parade" on August 15, with sponsorship by the Hong Kong Tramways Ltd, and Tong Seng Co Ltd.

Officiating at the ceremony were Senior Superintendent T HKI Chiu Kai-ting; Mr Henry Liu, Commander of the Hong Kong Road Safety Patrol; Mr Frankie Yick, Managing Director of Hong Kong Tramways Ltd, as well as Mr K P Yue and Mr M K Yue, both from Tong Seng Co Ltd.

Following the ceremony, the officiating guests led members of T HKI's Road Safety Team and Hong Kong Road Safety Patrol on a parade on a theme tramcar printed with road safety messages, during which leaflets and promotional souvenirs were distributed to members of the public, especially those waiting for tramcars at major tram stops.

In his speech, Mr Chiu pointed out that there had been a gradual reduction in traffic accidents involving tramcars since the first campaign was launched in 2004 - from 92 in 2004 to 62 in 2006.

Noting that there were 28 similar accidents in the first half of 2007, he hoped this year's campaign would further heighten public awareness of tram safety so as to achieve the aim of "Zero Accident on the Road, Hong Kong's Goal".
