Since the police scholarship scheme was launched in 2000 to encourage and commend police officers' children with outstanding academic achievements, a total of 348 scholarships have been awarded and the number of scholarship winners has jumped from nine in 2000 to 74 in 2007.

Speaking at the 2006/07 Scholarship Award Ceremony in the capacity of the trustee of the Police Children's Education Trust and Police Education and Welfare Trust on August 24, Commissioner Tang King-shing said the increases indicated that the academic results of police children had improved year after year.

"The two police education trusts have existed for 40 years since their establishment in 1967. Over the years, various scholarship plans have provided financial assistance for thousands of police children to subsidise their studies and encourage them to work hard. Many of them have completed their studies and contributed to the prosperity and development of Hong Kong by putting what they have learnt to good use at work. The scholarship scheme was introduced in 2000 to encourage and commend police children with outstanding academic results," Mr Tang added.

CP stressed that the success of the Police Children's Education Trust and the Police Education and Welfare Trust is never in doubt, and the success was made possible by "the people who have made contributions to the trusts".

"Firstly, we're grateful to members of the Joint Management Committees and the Joint Investment Advisory Boards of the two trusts. They are the elites of society and help the Force manage the trusts as a social responsibility. I've to express my heart-felt thanks to Mr Victor Li, Chairman of the Joint Management Committees, and Mr Jacob Tsang, Chairman of the Joint Investment Advisory Boards. They have made many useful recommendations for the management policies, financial arrangements and investment strategies of the two trusts. Without the efforts of the chairmen and their members, the trusts would not have operated so effectively," said Mr Tang.

Thanking the donors from many sectors of the community, CP said that without their full support, the trusts would not have consolidated their existing success and fulfilled their missions.

Mr Tang noted that many Force members had made generous contributions to the trusts, manifesting camaraderie and upholding the Force's fine tradition.

In conclusion, he congratulated the 74 scholarship winners and encouraged them to strive for excellence and serve the community as a payback to their parents, the philanthropists and the Force.
