Deputy Commissioner (Operations) Yam Tat-wing attended Ramadan dinner (also known as Iftar) at Kowloon Mosque in Tsim Sha Tsui as guest of honour on September 18. He was greeted warmly by the Chief Imam and the Kowloon Mosque management on arrival. District Commander of Yau Tsim District (YDIST), Chief Superintendent Chung Hung-fung, and key personnel of the District also attended Iftar to strengthen ties and friendship with their Muslim neighbours. Other guests included the Secretary for Home Affairs, Mr Tsang Tak-sing, Consul-Generals based in Hong Kong, including those from the UAE, Kuwait, Egypt, India, Iran, Pakistan and Bangladesh, as well as representatives from various Muslim organisations. After the Ramadan dinner, the Chief Imam, Mr Muhammad Arshad, and the Chairman of the Incorporated Trustees of the Islamic Community Fund of Hong Kong (the Kowloon Mosque management), Mr Zoheir Tyebkhan, led Mr Yam and other VIP guests to tour around Kowloon Mosque, and introduced to them the history of Kowloon Mosque as well as the lives and culture of Muslims. "It was a very good experience indeed," said Mr Yam after his visit to Kowloon Mosque. Yau Tsim District has been enhancing communication with the Non-ethnic Chinese Community (NEC) and engaging them to support local policing over the years. The District's latest initiative was recruitment of NEC volunteers to assist the police in crowd management operations. During the operations for the firework displays on July 1 and October 1 this year, six NEC volunteers - two Nepalese, two Indians and two Pakistanis - assisted by working as communicators for their own ethnic members at the Police Information Booths set up in a crowded operational area. The NEC community greatly appreciated Yau Tsim District's initiatives to enhance understanding and communication with their members, while the NEC volunteers found it meaningful to contribute to bridging the police with their community. Yau Tsim District's forthcoming initiative will take the form of another anti-drug seminar cum variety show for NEC parents and children on November 10, following the success of a similar event in September last year. NEC community leaders are supporting this initiative and have pledged to mobilise their communities to participate in the event and further promote anti-drug and fight crime messages among them.
