EU HKI volunteers interact with ethnic minorities |

Members of the Hong Kong Island Emergency Unit (EU HKI) Volunteer Corps had a cultural exchange with ethnic minority communities on August 27 when they hosted a family day camp at the Sai Kung Outdoor Recreation Centre, in conjunction with the Causeway Bay Integrated Family Services Centre and the Hong Kong Islamic Youth Association Mashed Amman & Oman Ramjet Asdic Islamic Centre. Over 100 children and their parents mainly from ethnic South Asian families, accompanied by 20 Corps members, enjoyed recreational facilities and games in a jovial atmosphere. Cantonese and simple English were used throughout the day, not only providing opportunities for the volunteers to improve their conversational English, but also boosting their knowledge of different ethnic cultures. Senior inspector Yeung Man-pun, vice-chairman of the EU HKI Volunteer Corps who coordinated the day camp, said that apart from local community, his Corps has been planning to extend voluntary services to different communities in line with the Force's "total caring" spirit. "The day camp has opened the door for colleagues to meet ethnic minorities. Through the cultural exchange with the ethnic minorities and participation in Islamic activities, officers would understand better the different spectrums of society. It is also hoped that the experience they have gained would help them deal with cases involving ethnic minorities in the future," SIP Yeung added.
