The Police Volunteer Services Corps (PVSC) has won three Civil Service Volunteer Action Awards for being the "longest", "greatest" and "widest" participating unit in terms of hours of voluntary service, number of staff participating and range of target groups provided with service.

The three awards were among a total of eight presented by the Secretary for the Civil Service (SCS), Miss Denise Yue, at the Hong Kong Central Library on January 31.

Director of Personnel and Training Tang Hau-sing and Police Civil Secretary Pang King-leung attended the ceremony to lend support to the PVSC, which was represented by the convener, New Territories North Regional Commander Cheung Siu-wah and three Secretariat members.

The Civil Service Bureau launched the Civil Service Volunteer Action initiative in April last year to promote the Civil Service Volunteer Work programme by encouraging civil servants to form teams to serve the community with different voluntary services in their free time. The programme attracted the participation of over 30 Government departments and 50 civil service volunteer teams. In the first six months, more than 30,000 service hours were recorded, with 9,312 contributed by the PVSC.

In a related event on February 2, Commissioner Tang King-shing hosted a lunch reception in the Senior Officers' Mess for officers who are giving up their own time to help the needy. Over 140 representatives from the PSVC, Carelinks Cadre, Operation Breakthrough and JPC Volunteer Scheme attended the reception, during which Mr Tang encouraged the representatives to continue serving the community and their colleagues.
