Two young officers - Inspector Yu Sum-yee from Sheung Shui Division and Police Constable Tsang Hing-hung from Wan Chai Division - were among the 120 bearers who carried the Olympic Torch through Hong Kong on May 2.

Both officers have been nominated for the Torch Relay by the sports associations they belong to: IP Yu by the Hong Kong Cycling Association and PC Tsang by the Hong Kong Rugby Football Union. IP Yu ran for a section of Tai Chung Kiu Road in Sha Tin, the New Territories, while PC Tsang, a section of the Kap Shui Mun Bridge in the New Territories.

The officers are delighted with the honour of being selected as torchbearers for the historic Torch Relay, and see their participation as another form of support for the Beijing Olympic Games.

Before joining the Force, the officers had made the grade in the sports they love. IP Yu started playing artistic cycling at the age of six and has subsequently represented Hong Kong in many international competitions and earned many prizes.

PC Tsang has been an active member of his rugby association for eight years, responsible for developing and promoting rugby among the young people in Hong Kong. Like IP Yu, PC Tsang has represented Hong Kong in international competitions, including the last Asian Games in Doha and the Hong Kong Rugby Sevens.

After the Torch Relay, Inspector Yu told Offbeat: "It is indeed my pleasure and honour to have taken part in the relay. Many police officers have devoted themselves whole-heartedly to preparations for the event. I was touched by the warm support from my colleagues. When I returned to my job in Tai Po, many colleagues asked me about the relay and wanted to take photos with the torch."
