Force raises $725,000 for Special Olympics

A total of 946 Force members and their families turned out to support the fund -raising drive, "Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics", at Sha Tin Park on May 18.

The Torch Run, an annual event co-organised by the Hong Kong Special Olympics, Hong Kong Sports Association for the Mentally Handicapped, the Leisure and Cultural Services Department and the seven disciplinary forces in Hong Kong, aims at raising funds for promoting long-term training and overseas competition opportunities for mentally handicapped athletes.

After Commissioner Tang King-shing and other guests officiated at the opening ceremony, the Torch Run commenced, with New Territories North Regional Commander Cheung Siu-wah leading Force runners on the route along the Shing Mun River.

The Force raised over $725,000 out of a total of $1.6 million, and Kowloon West Region, Information Systems Wing and New Territories North Region notched up the honour of being the three top fund-raising Formations. As an individual donor, Chief Inspector Chan Ngai-yu contributed the third highest donation sum.

Tribute must also go to the Hong Kong Police Volunteer Services Corps for providing over 100 volunteer workers for the event. The Catering, Clubs and Sports Group of the Personnel Wing, has thanked Force members for their generous support for the Torch Run.
