Further trial of electric scooters

Officers from Sha Tin, Sheung Shui and Wan Chai divisions have been selected to try out the ultimate in eco-friendly police patrol motorcycles after the Force had acquired six zero emission vehicles. First ridden by traffic officers during the Olympic Torch Relay, the electric scooters show great potential for the urban policing environment and 19 officers have since undergone a half-day familarisation programme at the Police Driving and Traffic Training Division.

Police Driving Instructor Senior Constable Too Chi-hau who conducted the eco-driving training, pointed out: "The Vectrix is very different from a normal motorcycle as the rider cannot use the sound of the engine to determine gear and adjust throttle; so this can be a little eerie for novice motorcyclists."

Riders have very quickly adapted to and praised its handling in a variety of circumstances, including use of a unique "multi-function throttle" that provides for regenerative braking in what amounts to a reverse gear.

Constable Ng Lui-sun from Sha Tin Division commented: "I have three years' police motorcycling experience and found the scooter very easy to handle and control. The transmission and better seating design really make it a pleasure to ride. The provision of other features, such as a windshield and bright front headlamp, is a definite improvement."

Constable Ngan Siu-ming from the same division also has three years police motorcycling experience and rides his own 400-c.c. scooter to work. He commented: "The new scooter is very easy to handle and has performance characteristics similar to my own scooter but the throttle is more responsive than police motorcycles. I also like the 'reverse gear' feature which is not available on other motorcycles."

Constable Lo King-fat from Sheung Shui Division is a little more wary. "I like the handling but I am not sure whether the bike will be up to task for frontline work as its range is limited, compared with a conventional motorcycle."

Time will tell when trial of the first few zero emission vehicles is extended to other formations over the next few months, including Traffic.
