Commissioner Tang King-shing recently attended the 77th INTERPOL General Assembly, held in St Petersburg, Russia as part of the National Central Bureau China (NCB China) delegation. Accompanying him on the trip were Director of Crime and Security Lee Ka-chiu and Senior Superintendent Tang Ping-keung of Liaison Bureau. Heading the delegation was Deputy Director General Xue Dongzheng of the Ministry of Public Security. Other members included representatives from INTERPOL Macao, China, headed by Mr Jose Luciano Correia de Oliveira, Legal Consultant of the Office of the Secretary for Security of the Macao SAR. Over 700 delegates from 153 member countries attended the assembly held between October 7 and 10, together with 25 observing institutions and organisations, including the United Nations and Europol. Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin gave an opening address at the assembly, pledging Russian support for INTERPOL efforts in fighting international crime. St Petersburg, a centre of Russian history and culture, not only provided an excellent setting for delegates to develop new contacts with their international counterparts and to renew old acquaintances, but also celebrated the 85th Anniversary of INTERPOL and the admission of the Vatican City State as the 187th member country. During the first day of the assembly, CP delivered a presentation on the subject "Tackling Global Organised Crime - the Hong Kong Experience", detailing the Force's efforts and contributions in combatting trans-national crime and fostering co-operation with INTERPOL and overseas law enforcement agencies. This aspect included an update on the work undertaken by the Force as a founding member and Chair of the INTERPOL Asia Pacific Expert Group on Asian Organised Crime since its establishment in December 2006. CP's speech drew an enthusiastic response from the audience. The end of the assembly saw a number of co-operation agreements with other international organisations being endorsed, and the adoption of 18 recommendations covering a wide range of topics.
