The "2008 Sau Mau Ping Road Safety Town Open Day cum Kindergarten Painting Competition Prize Presentation Ceremony", jointly organised by the Road Safety Team of Traffic Kowloon East and the Road Safety Patrol of Kowloon East Region, was held on October 12 to drive home road safety messages.

The event featured various programmes including a Road Safety Chinese Opera by the elderly, a performance by the kindergarten road safety patrol, a demonstration of drink-driving breathing devices and laser speed detection devices (laser gun), a clown performance and game stalls. Children also had a chance to ride on a mini electronic car to tour the Road Safety Town.

Speaking at the opening of the Open Day, Kowloon East Regional Commander Blaine Hoggard reported that progress is being made towards the goal of "Zero Accidents on the Road, Hong Kong's Goal", and that the traffic accidents involving pedestrians in Kowloon East Region in the first nine months of this year have dropped by 13.3 per cent to 376 from 434 in the same period last year. A similar comparison shows that the total number of traffic accidents with injuries has dropped by over 12 per cent.

Mr Hoggard also stressed that it was important for pedestrians not to use a mobile phone while crossing the road, adding that drinking remained a contributory factor for traffic accidents and Kowloon East Region would spare no effort to combat such a serious offence.

"Our message is: 'if you drink, do not drive!'," he noted. Winners of the "Kowloon East Kindergarten Painting Competition" were presented with prizes before 600 residents and professional drivers.
