Two officers have been presented with Gold Award Certificates and another 15 officers with Letters of Appreciation for their contributions to the Police Staff Suggestions Scheme. In addition, one of the Gold Award Certificate recipients also received a cash prize of $1,000. The prizes were presented at a ceremony held at Arsenal House Multi-purpose Hall on November 28 by Director of Management Services Mike Dowie, the representative of the Senior Consultative Committee, Chief Superintendent Shum Wai-kin, and the representative of the Junior Consultative Committee Station Sergeant Wong Ching. Speaking at the prize presentation ceremony, Mr Dowie said that since its inception in 1994, the suggestion scheme had received wide and enthusiastic support, with more than 5,000 suggestions received over the past 14 years, and over 300 submissions received this year. "It is vital that staff have a direct channel to make suggestions. This gives staff who are on the frontline, and who are responsible for delivering services to the public, the ability to raise what they see as opportunities for improvements," he noted. He urged all the senior officers present to encourage their staff to make suggestions whenever they see something that they feel could be done better. "All of the officers who are to receive an award here today have shown that they are committed to improving the way we do things. And on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, I thank you," said Mr Dowie. "Each suggestion has been scrutinised by the Police Staff Suggestions Committee and has been deemed worthy of public recognition. All of the ideas have merit and one way or another have improved the quality of service we deliver to the public or have enhanced the support we provide for our fellow officers," he added. Mr Dowie pointed out that staff associations are represented on the Police Staff Suggestions Committee as it is important to have peer review, not just review by senior officers. He also expressed his appreciation to members of the committee for making the Scheme a success, by helping with judging the level of awards and making useful suggestions to improve the running of the Scheme.
