The chilly weather on December 7 did not dampen public support and enthusiasm for the 2008 Road Safety Launching Ceremony cum Road Safety Vision Song and Symbol Promotion at the Siu Sai Wan Sports Ground. The event was organised by the Road Safety Council (RSC) and co-organised by the Road Safety Patrol (RSP). Officiating at the event were Mr Yam Tat-wing, Chairman of RSC; Mr Yu Kam-kee, Chairman of the Road Safety Campaign Committee; Mr Ching Kam-cheong, Chairman of the Road Safety Research Committee; Mr Wong Kam-po, qualifier for the 2008 Beijing Olympics, and artiste Miss Priscilla Chan, together with three major sponsors. The "Kick-off" Ceremony was highlighted by flying of model helicopters with banners showing the road safety vision - "Zero Accidents on the Road, Hong Kong's Goal". The event programmes were innovative, featuring Tai Chi performance by thousands of elderly persons to form red and green man crossings to illustrate the importance of complying with road signals, with the Police Band playing, and the spectators singing, the Road Safety Vision Song. In his opening speech, Mr Yam emphasised: "To strive for achievement in promotion of road safety, engaging every member of the public is essential. Though Hong Kong's level of road safety ranks 7th in the world in 2007 in terms of fatality rate of traffic accidents, there is however no room for complacency." RSC will continue maintaining close co-operation with various government departments, the 18 District Councils, various transport trades and associations so as to promulgate road safety messages to road users and further improve Hong Kong's road safety level. Therefore, the event focussed on interactive games on key areas of concern, i.e. anti-drink driving, elderly pedestrian safety and cycling safety with the participation by the public, RSC, sponsors and artistes. The programmes' highlight was singing of the Road Safety Vision Song by Miss Priscilla Chan, together with 50 kindergarten kids from RSP and all spectators at Siu Sai Wan. At the finale, all RSC members and guests were invited to toast the Council's 35th anniversary.
