The Junior Police Call (JPC) has declared war on drugs by launching a two-year territory-wide anti-drug publicity campaign.

The curtain was raised for the campaign when a JPC Anti-drug Day Launching Ceremony was held at Police Headquarters on December 20.

Supported by the Beat Drugs Fund, the campaign aims at reinforcing anti-drug education and publicity among youngsters and arousing public awareness of the drug abuse problem by means of a variety of activities to be organised between December 2008 and July 2010. On each anti-drug day, JPC members from the 20 police districts throughout the territory will simultaneously participate in anti-drug educational or publicity activities in their districts.

To show their support for JPC's major anti-drug initiative, the Secretary for Justice, Mr Wong Yan Lung, and Commissioner Tang King-shing officiated at the Anti-drug Day Launching Ceremony.

Speaking at the ceremony, Mr Wong praised the Force as the vanguard in the battle against drugs. He said the Narcotics Bureau (NB) of the Force had spared no efforts in the areas of education, law enforcement and publicity to ensure that the policies laid down by the Narcotics Division would be carried out effectively. Shortly after the launching ceremony, NB officers would team up with other youth organisations to organise anti-drug publicity activities.

The next two years would see 150,000 JPC members from all police districts taking part in a variety of anti-drug activities, in a bid to reinforce social consciousness of fighting drugs, and to publicise positive and important anti-drug messages, Mr Wong added.

After his speech, Mr Wong, together with CP, administered an oath to fight drugs, sworn by 22 JPC Advanced Leaders and other JPC representatives.

Immediately after conclusion of the launching ceremony, Mr Wong and CP left for the Kowloon Park in Tsim Sha Tsui to officiate at another anti-drug publicity activity jointly organised by NB and the Scout Association of Hong Kong.
