The Force Research Award Scheme (FRAS) Working Group would like to express its deepest gratitude for the tremendous support from all levels within the Force. "The Working Group received a total of 45 entries before the competition's closing date at the end of February. This is a remarkable success in terms of Force members' interest and enthusiasm," said Mr Gavin Brown, Deputy Director of the Police College and Chairman of the FRAS Working Group. FRAS was launched in May last year by the Police College with a view to promoting and coordinating research activities in the Force. It aims at encouraging and recognising research efforts in the Force and is open to all policy wings, regions and individual Force members. As a token of appreciation, a number of awards with prizes, including certificates signed by Deputy Commissioner (Management) and book vouchers, will be presented to the winners of each entry category. "We are delighted that FRAS participants come from a wide variety of backgrounds and services, in particular those coming from the JPO Cadre which has submitted about half of all entries," said Dr Albert Cheuk Chun-yin, Director of the Police College. A total of 66 officers at ranks ranging from PC to ACP are participating in FRAS as authors or co-authors of 45 papers, including regular (89 per cent), civilian (nine per cent) and auxiliary (two per cent). Subject areas include Crime and Security (22 per cent), Operation and Support (24 per cent), Personnel and Training (36 per cent), and Management Service (18 per cent). "With such a broad spectrum of research subjects, we are confident that the FRAS papers will bring valuable insights into improvement of Force policy and performance," said Mr Brown. The FRAS Working Group revealed that due to the overwhelming response, more time would be required for the adjudication and moderation of all FRAS papers and, therefore, announcement of results and presentation ceremony would be rescheduled for August this year, with the exact date to be announced in OffBeat and Force NoticeBoard in due course. FRAS participants will be informed individually of arrangements.
