The Chief Executive, Mr Donald Tsang, has expressed profound sadness at Mr Hui's passing away, and conveyed his deepest condolences to Mr Hui's family.

"Mr Hui was an outstanding leader and will be fondly remembered for the manner he professionally steered the Police Force through the 1997 transition of sovereignty and his warm personality. I and my colleagues within the Hong Kong Police Force convey our deepest sympathy to his family," Mr Tang said.

Mr Hui joined the Force as a recruit Inspector in 1963 at the age of 19. He was promoted to Superintendent in 1972, Chief Superintendent in 1982, Assistant Commissioner in 1984, Senior Assistant Commissioner in 1989, Deputy Commissioner in 1993 and Commissioner in 1994.
