A total of 285 young people, comprising 66 police officers and 219 Junior Police Call members, were commended on June 6 at the Bronze Award Presentation Ceremony of the Hong Kong Award for Young People (HKAYP) for their outstanding performances in the award scheme.

They received their HKAYP bronze awards from Deputy Commissioner (Operations) Yam Tat-wing and the Chairman of the HKAYP Award Council, Mr Ho Che-leung, at the Police Sports and Recreation Club.

Speaking at the ceremony, Mr Yam pointed out that the HKAYP required participants to overcome every challenge brought about by HKAYP activities with self-discipline and perseverance before achieving their goals. During this process, they achieved personal development and became responsible persons.

Noting that the Force had been promoting healthy lifestyles and encouraging officers to join the award scheme, Mr Yam was delighted to see 66 police officers receiving their awards.

He also presented Certificates of Appointment to 21 expedition instructors, four of whom are police officers.

The HKAYP scheme aims at building up young people's confidence and developing their potentials. Participants, who are aged between 14 and 25, will be awarded gold, silver or bronze medals after joining activities under the categories of skills, service, expedition, physical recreation and residential project.

The Force first organised HKAYP (formerly called The Duke of Edinburgh's Award) activities at the former Police Cadet School in 1973 and established the Hong Kong Police Operating Authority in 1979 under Police Public Relations Branch, which is one of the 17 operating authorities of the award scheme, to coordinate relevant activities.
