Enlisting the support of the transport trade to promote road safety has long been an operational priority of Traffic Hong Kong Island (T HKI). Public light bus (PLB), one of the most popular modes of transport in Hong Kong, accounts for more than 200 traffic accidents in Hong Kong Island Region over the past few years. To make PLB drivers more aware of safe driving, in support of Traffic Branch Headquarters' initiatives on Project Saferide and Operation Outranger, the Road Safety Team of T HKI organised two seminars on driving safety earlier this month for the drivers of AMS Public Transport Holdings Limited which operates 90 per cent of maxicab routes in HKI Region.

Over 150 drivers attended the seminars, during which Woman Senior Inspector (WSIP) Veronica Lee, Road Safety Officer of T HKI, analysed the traffic accidents involving PLBs in HKI Region; introduced the common causes such as jumping red light and speeding, and traffic accident blackspots, and gave an update on the laws on drink driving and dangerous driving causing death. She also highlighted the mission and operation of Project Saferide.

Station Sergeant (SSGT) Leung Tak-kai, Officer-in-Charge of the District Traffic Team of Western District, assisted in demonstrating the use of the pre-screening device for Random Breath Test. Two guest speakers, Mr Yue King-pong and Mr Jacky Lee, offered the audiences expert advice on fitting and maintaining tyres. At the end of the the seminars, Mr Chan Man-chun, CEO and Executive Director of AMS, said his drivers had obtained a great deal of road safety information. He was confident that the drivers would strictly comply with traffic law and maintain a high driving standard.

As a a token of his appreciation of T HKI's effort to organise the seminars, Mr Chan presented certificates to WSIP Lee, SSGT Leung, Mr Yue and Woman Chief Inspector Monica Au Yeung of Traffic Branch Headquarters who was in attendance. Finally, all participants pledged to support police efforts on road safety and safe driving.
