Experience sharing on cycling safety |

As part of Traffic Hong Kong's (T HKI) Action Plan for 2009, the Enforcement and Control Division (E&C DIV) of T HKI invited experts from the Hong Kong Cycling Alliance to attend three experience sharing sessions on cycling safety with E&C DIV officers during the Unit Training Days last month. The Alliance is devoted to promoting higher levels of cycling in Hong Kong and making Hong Kong a bike-friendly city. It promotes cycling in Hong Kong through road environment improvement and education on safety of cycling and driving on the road. At the sessions, Mr Tin Chi-wai and Mr Martin Turner, both from the Alliance, pointed out that most of the accidents involving cyclists were caused by the negligence and poor driving manners of other road users. They highlighted the problems and danger that cyclists frequently experienced on the road. In return, officers offered their views on the issues and quoted examples of cyclists failing to obey road traffic regulations and endangering themselves as well as other road users. The sessions concluded with the officers and the Alliance experts having a better understanding of the problems with cyclists. Both parties agreed that both cyclists and motorists had responsibilities to observe traffic regulations and behave properly on the road. T HKI will continue engaging the community in supporting the Commissioner's Operation Priorities on road safety.
