Membership of Tuen Mun District's (TMDIST) "Police School Ambassador Programme" has been boosted from 41 last year to 60 this year, following a recruitment drive. Served by TMDIST officers in their free time, the School Ambassador Programme aims at assisting School Liaison Officers in publicising fight crime messages to students and helping the School Ambassadors instil proper values in students and steer them away from crime.

Recruitment for the School Ambassador Programme for school year 2009-2010 has received an enthusiastic response, with some inspectorate officers volunteering their services as team leaders. The School Ambassadors are now serving 40 primary schools, 38 secondary schools and one professional education institute in Tuen Mun.

A ceremony was held in Tuen Mun Police Station recently to honour School Ambassadors for their contributions to the community in the past school year. Among the outstanding School Ambassadors, Sergeant Cheng Ping-kwok from Uniform Branch of Tuen Mun Division was complimented as "The Most Outstanding Police School Ambassador" in 2008-09.

Following appointment for the new school year by TMDIST Commander Choy Kin-cheung at the ceremony, the 60 School Ambassadors joined a workshop to master the basic concepts of disciplining and counselling teenagers and communication skills. This arrangement helped frontline officers better understand the teenage-related matters in their District.

Meanwhile, a multi-agency Working Group has been formed in (TMDIST) to support the territory-wide Fight Drug Campaign organised by the Narcotics Division to prevent drug abuse by teenagers.

Known as "Tuen Mun District Fight Against Drugs Campaign for Teens Organising Committee", the Working Group was formed by TMDIST, Social Welfare Department, Tuen Mun District Welfare Office, Home Affairs Department, Wofoo Social Enterprises, Lingnan University, and six local youth services units.

The Organising Committee is promoting "Say No to Drugs!" with a wide range of activities, including visits to housing estates. On August 15, Tuen Mun District Commander Choy Kin-cheung appointed 214 Fight Drugs Ambassadors, who were later trained up by the Social Welfare Department and non-government organisations.

On the afternoon of September 12, the Organising Committee kicked off a "Caring Visit Day" for the Fight Drugs Ambassadors. That day, 10 Police Constables from the TMDIST Uniform Branch participated in door-to-door visits to housing estates in Tuen Mun with about 200 Fight Drugs Ambassadors, local District Councillors and members of the Organising Committee to deliver anti-drug messages.

These new and old Police School Ambassadors are serving about 80 primary and secondary schools in Tuen Mun in their free time
