Officers of the Intelligence Division of the Commercial Crime Bureau (CCB) recently discovered a new crime modus operandi: a male suspect entered piano tutorial schools located in shopping centres across Hong Kong and stole piano teachers' credit cards and wallets. The stolen cards were then immediately used to buy luxury goods before the victims were able to have their credit card service suspended.

In all, 15 cases were uncovered, with over $210,000 worth of property purchased. After in-depth analysis, the suspect was identified, and the Regional Crime Unit 2 of Hong Kong Island (RCU 2 HKI) was immediately alerted. The suspect was arrested red-handed when he tried to commit the same offence again. Later, a large amount of property connected with previous cases was seized at the suspect's home.

As a token of their appreciation, the Management Committee of the Card Authorisation System of the People's Republic of China recently presented plaques to officers of CCB and RCU HKI, which were accepted by CCB Chief Superintendent Cheung Kwai-kee and RCU HKI Superintendent Karl Spencer.

After the presentation, CCB Chief Inspector Paul Bailey said: "This was a great example of how CCB can successfully work in partnership with other units of the Force."
